So you’ve decided to pop the question. Congratulations! You’ve already done the hardest part. Now comes the part that sends most people into a mild panic: actually planning the proposal.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning, the right setup, and a team you can trust, you can pull off a proposal that looks like it took months to orchestrate even if you started thinking about it last Tuesday. We’ve helped plan and set up proposals all across Lubbock and West Texas, and we’re sharing everything we know right here.

Let’s get into it.

Step 1: Think About Your Partner First, Pinterest Second

Before you start scrolling through proposal inspo at midnight, take a few minutes to think about the person you’re proposing to. What do they love? Are they someone who would light up at a big, dramatic moment in front of friends and family, or would they prefer something intimate and private? Do they love being the center of attention, or does that kind of thing make them want to disappear?

There’s no wrong answer here. A quiet rooftop proposal with candles and a flower wall can be just as stunning as a grand gesture with cold spark machines and a crowd cheering. What matters is that it feels like them.

A few questions worth asking yourself:

  • Would they want people there, or just the two of you?
  • Indoor or outdoor?
  • Daytime or evening?
  • Do they care more about the visual setup or the personal moment?
  • Are they going to want photos, and if so, do they know a photographer is coming?

Once you know the answers, the rest of the planning gets a lot easier.

Step 2: Pick Your Location

Lubbock has more great proposal spots than most people realize. Here are a few that work really well depending on the vibe you’re going for:

For the romantic outdoor proposal: Mackenzie Park has beautiful open spaces, especially around sunset. The lighting is incredible for photos and it’s easy to set up a styled backdrop without a lot of foot traffic getting in the way. Another great location is Buddy Holly Lake. They have docks that overlook the lake that make for a very picturesque and memorable proposal.

For something more private: A backyard proposal is genuinely underrated. You control the environment completely, you can set up whatever décor you want, and there’s something really personal about proposing in a space that means something to both of you. You could also reserve The Willows Event Center at 6303 82nd St. here in Lubbock. It’s Lubbock’s best kept secret garden.

For the grand entrance moment: Many of Lubbock’s local venues and breweries make beautiful proposal backdrops, especially spots like English Newsom Cellars and their beautiful vineyards or at the Spirit Ranch and their scenic views and peacocks.

For something totally unexpected: Think about where you had your first date, where you met, or a place that holds a specific memory for the two of you. The location itself becomes part of the story.

Step 3: Decide on Your Setup

This is where it gets fun. Your proposal setup is what transforms a great moment into an unforgettable one. Here’s what we typically see working really well:

The flower arch or heart arch. A heart arch or floral wedding arch behind you as you get down on one knee is one of those visuals that just hits differently in photos. It frames the moment perfectly and gives the whole scene a fairy-tale quality without trying too hard.

A flower wall backdrop. If you want your proposal photos to look like they came out of a magazine, a flower wall is the move. We offer several colors, so you can match it to your partner’s favorites or keep it classic with white.

Candles and flowers. Never underestimate the power of soft candlelight and fresh florals. They add warmth, romance, and a sense of intention that tells your partner this was planned with love.

The “Will You Marry Me?” sign. Let the sign do some of the talking before you even open your mouth. It sets the scene the moment they walk in and makes for an incredible photo.

Cold spark machines. If you really want to create a cinematic moment, cold spark machines are the finishing touch that takes everything to another level. Trigger them the moment you get down on one knee, or save them for after they say yes and let the sparks fly as you celebrate. Either way, nobody forgets it.

The best part? You don’t have to figure all of this out yourself. When you book a proposal setup with Tipsy Tails LBK, we sit down with you, talk through your vision, and build a custom setup around exactly what you’re going for.

Step 4: Book vendors such as Photographer and Mariachi.

Photographer

Please, please book a photographer. We say this with love. You are going to be in the most emotionally charged moment of your life and the absolute last thing you want is to be fumbling with a phone trying to capture it yourself while also trying to hold back tears and remember the speech you practiced seventeen times.

A photographer positioned nearby before your partner arrives can capture the setup, the approach, the moment you get down on one knee, the reaction, and the celebration after, all without your partner knowing they’re even there until it’s done.

We work with photographers regularly and can connect you with trusted local options if you don’t already have someone in mind. Just ask when you reach out.

Mariachi

If you really want to make your partner’s jaw drop, few things in Lubbock do it quite like a live mariachi band appearing at just the right moment. Mariachi music has deep roots in West Texas culture and there is something undeniably magical about the sound of a full mariachi ensemble filling the air as you get down on one knee. Whether they serenade your partner as they walk in, play softly in the background during the setup reveal, or break into a full celebratory song the moment they say yes, a live mariachi performance turns a beautiful proposal into a full experience. Lubbock has a wonderful selection of local mariachi bands to choose from, including Mariachi Azteca and several other talented local groups. A quick search for mariachi bands in Lubbock will turn up plenty of options, and we’re happy to point you in the right direction if you need help finding one. Just ask when you reach out.

Step 5: Plan the Timing

Timing is everything for a proposal, and we mean that literally. Here’s what to think through:

Time of day. Evening proposals photograph beautifully because the softer light is incredibly flattering and candles and LED lighting really pop. That said, a golden-hour outdoor proposal during sunset is equally stunning if the location is right.

The approach. How are you getting your partner to the location without giving it away? Think through the excuse you’ll use, whether you’ll have a friend or family member help with the logistics, and how much time you need between your arrival and theirs to make sure everything is in place.

Coordination with your setup team. When you book with us, we’ll coordinate timing with you directly. We arrive early, get everything set up perfectly, and make sure we’re out of the way before your partner arrives. The space will be ready and waiting.

Give yourself a buffer. Things rarely go exactly according to plan. Build in some extra time on both ends so you’re not rushing and stressed when the moment comes.

Step 6: Enjoy the Moment

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about proposals: no matter how much you plan, the moment itself will take on a life of its own. The speech you memorized might go out the window. You might cry before you even get the words out. Your partner might start crying before you finish the sentence.

That’s the good stuff. That’s the real moment.

The setup, the backdrop, the photographer, the cold sparks — all of it exists to frame the moment, not replace it. When everything is in place and your partner walks in and sees what you’ve created for them, that reaction is all yours. We just help make sure everything looks perfect around it.
